How Does a Reverse Osmosis System Work?
To understand how a reverse osmosis system works, you must understand the different components contained within a reverse osmosis system. These systems consist of between 3 and 7 filters, each of which performs a different function.
The first filter is known as the pre-filter. It’s responsible for filtering out sand, dirt, and other forms of sediment.
Next up is the semipermeable membrane. This membrane does the bulk of the work, filtering out everything from arsenic, to lead, to calcium, to bacteria, to chlorine, and more.
Once the water has passed through the semipermeable membrane, it will arrive at the post-filters. Post-filters are responsible for filtering the contaminants that were not filtered by the semipermeable membrane. While not entirely successful, they leave only trace amounts of contaminants behind.
After the water has passed through this series of filters, it is stored in the reverse osmosis system’s storage tank. Water that is not successfully filtered is discarded.
The Benefits of the Reverse Osmosis System
Reverse osmosis comes with one primary benefit: it produces the cleanest, purest drinking water that’s technologically possible. Because this water is free of contaminants, it is void of strange tastes, strange smells, and strange textures.
Reverse osmosis water is also exceedingly safe for consumption. Because it is void of elements like lead, arsenic, and bacteria, it poses no health risks.
These systems run without the use of electricity. Entirely water pressure-driven, they cost essentially nothing to run. Once you’ve paid to have your system installed, you’ll only have to pay maintenance costs. On the whole, maintenance is very affordable.
Concerned about the amount of space a reverse osmosis system might take up? Don’t be. When it comes to at-home use, these systems can fit underneath their corresponding sinks. In other words, they’re pretty much unnoticeable.
The Downsides of the Reverse Osmosis System
While reverse osmosis systems are highly beneficial, they’re not without their flaws. They do have a few draw backs.
Perhaps the biggest downside of reverse osmosis systems is that they’re somewhat inefficient. Unlike many other systems, they don’t utilize all of the water that runs through them. Much of this water gets dumped, as it’s still filled with unwanted contaminants.
Because of this, reverse osmosis systems should not be used as whole-home purification solutions. While great for drinking water purposes, they’re not efficient enough to accommodate showers, baths, dishes, and the like.
The only other issue associated with reverse osmosis systems is that they filter out beneficial contaminants as well as detrimental contaminants. These beneficial contaminants include iron, calcium, and magnesium, all of which are needed to complete a healthy human diet.
That said, it’s not difficult to find these minerals elsewhere. They’re found in a variety of foods and are fairly easy to work into your diet.
