Installing a Reverse Osmosis System: What You Need to Know from an East Dundee Water Purification Company

Reverse osmosis system at a house in East Dundee, IllinoisDo you want your water to be as clean and pure as possible? Interested in establishing a continuous stream of pure drinking water in your home? If so, a reverse osmosis system could be right for you.

Reverse osmosis systems are designed to remove almost all of the contaminants from a water supply. This includes everything from chemicals, to minerals, to bacteria, and more.

Want to learn more about reverse osmosis and water purification systems in East Dundee? Then read on, because we’re going to discuss the details below.

How Does the Reverse Osmosis System Work?

The reverse osmosis system works by putting water through several levels of filtration. Each level is responsible for a different type of filtration. There could be anywhere from three to seven different filters in a single system. The exact number will vary based on the type of system you have.

Below, we’re going to discuss the specifics of the three primary filtration steps: pre-filtering, membrane filtering, and post-filtering.

Pre-filtering

The first filter in the reverse osmosis system is the pre filter. This filters out large contaminants like sand, dirt, and other types of sediment. It prepares the water for more thorough filtration, taking some of the stress off of the semipermeable membrane.

Semipermeable Membrane Filtering

Once the water has made it through the pre-filter, it arrives at the semipermeable membrane. This is essentially the heart and soul of the reverse osmosis system. It removes nearly every contaminant in existence, including chemicals, minerals, and bacteria.

Some of the contaminants removed by the semipermeable membrane include iron, lead, arsenic, and E. coli. The membrane makes the water not only more drinkable, but healthier as well.

Post Filtering

Once the water has gone through the semipermeable membrane, it enters the post filter. This can be thought of as a quality-control step, as it removes any contaminants that might be left over. It’s not 100% perfect, and it sometimes leaves slight traces behind; however, in the grand scheme of things, those traces are negligible. They have essentially no effect on the quality of the water.

Things to Know About East Dundee Water Purification and Reverse Osmosis Systems

If you’re considering installing a reverse osmosis system, there are a few things you should know about them. These include the following:

Reverse Osmosis Systems Are Fairly Small

First, you should know that reverse osmosis systems are fairly small. Unlike water softeners, which can take up an entire corner of a room, reverse osmosis systems are typically small enough to fit underneath sinks and inside of cabinets. In other words, they do not take up a lot of space.

Reverse Osmosis Systems Can’t Accommodate an Entire Water Supply

Reverse osmosis systems are truly only designed to purify water that will be consumed. They’re not designed to purify cleaning water, pool water, or any other type of water, for that matter. The reason for this is that reverse osmosis systems aren’t efficient enough to purify a home’s entirely water supply.

If you want to purify the non-drinking water in your home, you’ll want to install a water softener, and maybe even an iron filtration system or chemical injection system.

Reverse Osmosis Systems Are Great for Cooking as Well

While reverse osmosis systems are most commonly used to purify drinking water, they can be beneficial for cooking purposes as well. Because they remove almost all of the contaminants from water, they create a type of water that has no effect on the dishes it’s being used in. Reverse osmosis water is consistently pure, and therefore, it always provides the desired cooking effect.
