The Reverse Osmosis Process
The reverse osmosis process is fairly straightforward. Generally speaking, it includes the following steps:
When water first enters a reverse osmosis system, it goes through a series of pre-filters. These filters are responsible for removing sand, dirt, and other types of sediment from the water. They’re highly effective in doing so, and they will prepare the water to be sent through the system’s semipermeable membrane.
Semipermeable Membrane Filtration
Once the water has exited the final pre-filter, it will enter the semipermeable membrane. This is essentially like the heart of the reverse osmosis system.
The membrane removes almost every contaminant that the water contains — from chemicals, to minerals, to bacteria, and otherwise. Some of the contaminants removed by the semipermeable membrane include iron, arsenic, chlorine, and coliform bacteria.
After the water has exited the semipermeable membrane, it will enter a series of post-filters. These filters are responsible for purifying the water even further. They attempt to catch any contaminants that might still be remaining, and they are almost completely effective in doing so. Note, however, that reverse osmosis water will still contain trace amounts of some contaminants.
The process ends with containment. After the water has passed through the post filters, it’s sent to a large storage container. This container then holds the water until it’s ready to be used. To use the water, you simply turn on a faucet.
